FREE Thinker
This may come as a surprise to many of my friends. Yes, I am a free-thinker. My spiritual belief in God sets my mind free and from all the negativity.
Unfortunately, a busy mind is a characteristic of the modern lifestyle. Many had found it hard to fall asleep due to the constant barrage of thoughts that keeps running in our heads. Research has shown that such rumination can be harmful in the following ways:
* It affects our sleep and rest
* Triggers our stress response
* Kills our creativity
* Hypersensitive towards people who are around us
* Negatively affects our physical, mental, and emotional health.
For some, their minds are trapped in their past negative experiences that robbed them of enjoying their current moments.
If our thoughts become stuck, it’s time to take steps to free our minds. Here are four simple suggestions on how we can F.R.E.E. our minds:
F - FAITH: In his research, Richard Sloan, a professor of behavioral medicine at Columbia University Medical Center and author of Blind Faith: The Unholy Alliance of Religion and Medicine, found that prayers changes our brain chemistry. It's hard to ignore the growing body of research dedicated to the neural correlations and potential benefits of the practices of our faith. Knowing that God is in charge of our situations can help calm our minds.
R - RELAXATION TECHNIQUES: There are many ways to relax the mind. Doing deep-breathing exercises is one of the most effective. Studies show that deep breathing increases brain functioning, soothes the nervous system, cleanses the lungs, and promotes quality sleep. Doing it correctly will help us get on the right side of calm.
E - EXERCISE: Exercising focuses the body on its physical requirements and takes your attention off your mind. Exercise also releases endorphins and lowers cortisol, often bringing about a more positive and happier mood.
E - ENGAGE IN THE CURRENT: Live in the present moment. Focus on our the blessings that we have now. When we can do this consistently, our thought life will slow down and we will feel much more at peace and joy.
